About ColonyGuessr
ColonyGuessr is a daily game about the history of colonization. Each day you get a region and one question: who has colonized here? Military conquest, settler colonialism, chartered-company rule, protectorates, economic hegemony. The machinery varied. The extraction didn't.
ColonyGuessr is satire aimed at colonialism, not at the colonized. The format simplifies every event, so follow the sources for the full history.
Methodology
- Every answer is a documented colonization event with at least one published source. The end-of-game recap cites them.
- We use “colonized” broadly, and label each answer with its mechanism: occupation, company rule, annexation, and the rest.
- Dates are cut down to a start year and an end year. Where a period is contested or still running, we say so instead of smoothing it over.
- The jokes live in the game's chrome. The history itself is told straight.
Spotted an error or a missing perspective? Corrections with sources are welcome. History is contested ground and we would rather get it right.
